In Canada, we only ever learn history one way - from the perspective of predominantly white men - even though Black people have lived in Canada for over 400 years. To raise awareness of this issue with the policymakers that control the curriculum, we took real Grade 8 history textbooks and “Blacked Out” all the non-Black history. Of the 255 pages, only 13 remained. The campaign went viral and organically reached media outlets, educators, students, made the front page of the Toronto Star, and was used as a symbol of protest by the NDP party in parliament. The campaign even caught the attention of Nelson Textbooks who issued a statement that an addendum would be made to the books. As a result of our efforts Black History became mandatory in Ontario in February 2024.
